Silk painting

Using French dyes and ancient Asian techniques, the subjects reflect an unmistakable vibrancy that is both natural and fantastic. Subjects range from gorgeous village scenes to earthy primitive abstracts. Each piece displays a richness of color and unique details, as well as a playful sense of humor.

Techniques:
The silk is laid out on a stretcher or wax paper and the design is drawn . A special medium called gutta serti - a word meant to encircle or surround (also used in conjunction with cloisonne jewelery) -- is then applied. Gutta serti is the traditional silk painting resist. Gutta replaced wax in modern silk painting. Wax resist is still used occasionally for certain effects.

Dyes:
The French dyes used are developed exclusively for fabric painting and have a unique transparent quality. There is no residue. The work is steam set and is color-fast, so it can be washed or dry-cleaned. Dry-cleaning causes the colors to really brighten up. Because the dyes are bonded with the fabric, there is a wonderful drape of the silk.
